Kevin Scharnhorst is Health Catalyst's Chief Information Security Officer and a member of the executive team, with board reporting responsibility for the security program. He joined Health Catalyst in 2014 and has served as CISO since 2018.
Before moving into security, Kevin spent over 20 years as a software engineer and ran a parallel IT consulting practice for 30 years. Before Health Catalyst, he managed a software development team at Blue Cross of Idaho for five years. Before that, he built e-commerce systems for Micron Technology, a US-based semiconductor manufacturer, to sell and distribute its product portfolio directly to consumers.
Kevin is among the technical leaders shaping Health Catalyst's approach to AI governance, framing agentic AI as an identity problem and applying zero-trust discipline to agents the way it already applies to people. His team protects clients' most sensitive data asset, patient health information. It also maintains the company's HITRUST, SOC 2, ISO, and TX-RAMP certifications.
Kevin holds a Master of Science in Medical Informatics from Northwestern University, a Bachelor's in Business Administration in Computer Information Systems from Boise State University, and an Associate Degree from Brigham Young University-Idaho. He has taught as an adjunct professor at both the undergraduate and graduate level, including in Northwestern's Medical Informatics program.
