Featured Outcomes
  • Visualization of all critical data elements required for effective incident command—in the EMR and the incident command dashboards.
  • Data consistency across all visualizations.
  • Several hundred hours of burdensome manual data collection and review eliminated.

THE CHALLENGE

Allina Health needed integrated data and analytics to manage its organizational response and recovery to COVID-19 effectively. The organization had a substantial amount of actionable information in its EMR, but some data like supply and equipment were not available. Allina Health sought to enhance and organize the data from the EMR in a way that would allow it to track and visualize trends over time, further improving the organization’s ability to visualize and understand organizational readiness.

THE PROJECT

Allina Health leveraged the Health Catalyst® Data Operating System (DOS™) platform, the Instant Data Entry Application (IDEA), part of the Health Catalyst Self-Service Analytics Suite, and incident command executive dashboards to capture and visualize the crucial supply data required for COVID-19 incident response and recovery planning.

Allina Health is using IDEA to collect data regarding the availability of PPE, ventilator and anesthesia machines, infusion pumps, lab reagents and testing kits, and vital medications that are not in the EMR for reporting and analysis. The collected data are integrated into DOS real-time and sent back to the EMR for visualization and daily supply management.

Allina Health leverages DOS for its incident command executive dashboards, visualizing and trending the availability of these supplies, including the projected number of days on hand for each item. The organization is deploying readiness and response triggers, using upstream indicators to determine when the organization can ramp up, or ramp down, its elective surgery cases, assessing the impact of changes in the leading indicators on the availability of supplies and equipment.

THE RESULT

Allina Health is leveraging DOS and IDEA to broaden the availability of data in the EMR, capturing and visualizing the data required to respond to COVID-19 effectively. The organization is using DOS to drive its elective surgery recovery planning, including the identification of changes in leading indicators that suggest the demand for supplies may be increased beyond the available supply, requiring an adjustment in service delivery.
