SALT LAKE CITY – October 10, 2013 –In honor of his enduring impact on Utah’s healthcare industry, David Burton, MD, Chairman of SLC-based Health Catalyst and a former senior executive of Intermountain Health Care, was honored for his lifetime achievement as a “healthcare hero” by Utah Business magazine.

The award, featured in the October edition of Utah Business, recognizes Dr. Burton’s significant contributions to improving the health of Utah residents throughout his impressive 40-year career.

“This is a tremendous honor,” said Burton. “I’ve been blessed to have had three meaningful careers in healthcare.  In the second of those careers I was grateful to Intermountain Health Care for encouraging me to help lead transformations in health care financing and delivery that have been widely adopted by the industry and have contributed to improving the clinical effectiveness, cost-effectiveness and safety of care for patients in Utah and across the country.”

The annual “healthcare heroes” recognition acknowledges excellence and innovation within the healthcare system and contributes to continuously improving the standard of care that Utah’s organizations provide. According to Utah Business, “healthcare heroes are those remarkable individuals who fulfill their roles with unwavering courage, compassion and dignity. They are strong in the face of adversity and are constantly seeking quiet ways to improve the lives of those around them.”

As senior vice president of Intermountain Health Care and founding CEO of Intermountain’s managed care plan, SelectHealth, Dr. Burton helped develop the industry-leading quality improvement strategies that have helped to make Intermountain an international leader in healthcare delivery. In his 23 years at Intermountain, he helped guide the development of a system that kept healthcare quality among the highest and expenses among the lowest in the country.  After retiring from Intermountain in 2008, Dr. Burton became CEO and later Executive Chairman of Health Catalyst.

Health Catalyst empowers health systems to turn information into a strategic asset with powerful analytics applications built on the company’s Late-BindingTM enterprise data warehouse (EDW) platform. Health Catalyst then guides cross-functional teams of clinical, operations and IT experts in using the insights generated by its applications to make process changes that lead to significant improvements in patient care and bottom-line performance.

“Dr. Burton has an unmatched strategic mind and a thorough understanding of the process of delivering healthcare and its associated challenges,” said Steven C. Barlow, Co-Founder and former CEO of Health Catalyst. “His contributions to this community and industry are vast and far-reaching.”

During his years at Intermountain, Dr. Burton initiated the health system’s decision to apply the business principles of quality improvement to healthcare. Working with Brent James, M.D., Intermountain’s chief quality officer and executive director of the Institute for Health Care Delivery Research, Dr. Burton developed a strategy for using data to determine and then implement the specific changes in clinical process that would produce the most significant improvements in clinical and cost outcomes.  Drs. Burton and James also deployed a new approach at Intermountain that aligned management structures and systems with the redesign and standardization of care.
