Deaths from opioid drug overdoses continued to spike in 2017, reaching a new high of 70,000 deaths and contributing to a drop in life expectancy for the third year in a row, according to new datareleased this week by the Centers for Disease Control. Some preliminary evidence points to the trend flattening in the first few months of this year, thanks to clinician awareness of the crisis, and their use of a limited number of opioid risk assessment tools.
