Maureen Bisognano Advocates for Change as HAS™ 17 Keynote
Maureen Bisognano is a tireless advocate for change in healthcare—and a keynote speaker at the 2017 Healthcare Analytics Summit. A prominent authority on improving health system outcomes, processes, and quality, Maureen is an Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI) President Emerita and Senior Fellow dedicated to sharing her expertise with healthcare leaders around the world.
Maureen was the former IHI President and CEO for five years, after serving as Executive Vice President and COO for 15 years. Her healthcare expertise has been recognized by her elected membership to the National Academy of Medicine (NAM) and is evidenced by her long list of credentials, from CEO of Massachusetts Respiratory Hospital to Instructor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School and Research Associate in the Brigham and Women’s Hospital Division of Social Medicine and Health Inequalities. Maureen also started a global healthcare consulting practice at the Juran Institute.
What’s just as compelling as Maureen’s impressive, extensive healthcare experience (which began at Quincy Hospital, where she worked as a staff nurse, then Director of Nursing, then Director of Patient Services, and then COO), is what inspired her to pursue a meaningful career in healthcare improvement: her brother Johnny.
When Johnny was 17 years hold, he was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s disease. It progressed quickly and he was in and out of hospitals for several years. Doctors would come and go from his room, speaking over him and about him, but rarely to him. Then, one day, a radiation oncologist asked him, “Johnny, what do you want?” Johnny responded, “I want to go home.” The doctor carried Johnny to Maureen’s car and she took him home, where he spent his final days surrounded by family and friends who loved him. Johnny died just a few days after his 21st birthday.
This experience had a lasting impact on Maureen, revealing a simple but quintessential (and often overlooked) component of healthcare quality that continues to influence her work today: asking patients what they want and what matters to them.
Maureen’s dedication to healthcare quality improvement centers on a comprehensive approach to improvement. She says, “Empowering improvement is about empowering people. And not just by providing the latest, most innovative, and most successful approaches, but also through creating structures and processes through which everyone with a passion for improvement can become a forceful agent of change.”
